First, go to the Control Panel in Windows and click on the Hardware tab. Once you’re there, double-click on System to expand the options, then select Device Manager in the list of options that appear under System. For example, if I had another internal drive that I’d installed myself (as opposed to purchasing from HP). it would appear here with a disk number next to it (Disk 1 or Disk 2). Type SELECT DISK # (where # is whichever disk number was assigned for that drive). For example, if there’s only one hard drive on your computer and its disk number is 0. Then select Disk 0 like so Select Disk 0.
It should respond by saying Disk [#] is now selected. Now we’re going to create a partition using that space. Type CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY and press Enter. It should respond by saying Partition [#] created. Now we’re going to format our partition using the NTFS file system. Type FORMAT FS=NTFS QUICK and press Enter. It should respond by saying Format complete. Finally, we’re going to assign our new partition a letter name (which can be anything you want).
ASSIGN command can also be used
We’ll also use the ASSIGN command to do it. Type ASSIGN LETTER=Z: and press Enter. You should see an error message at first but don’t worry—that’s normal. Just keep pressing Enter until you get back to C:\> prompt. Type EXIT and press Enter key to close the DISKPART utility. After closing DISKPART, type exit again and hit enter key to close Command Prompt window completely.
Your computer will reboot automatically after exiting Command Prompt window completely. After rebooting, open the My Computer window and check out D: drive where all your files have been saved successfully! Congratulations! Your Compaq laptop has been restored successfully J
